The Hocking Hills is arguably the best place to wet a line in all of Ohio. With its picturesque lakes, sprawling forests, and meandering Hocking River, it’s not surprising that so many anglers choose our beloved region for memorable fishing vacations. Every summer, visitors flock to our neck of the woods in search of their personal best or a bevy of eating-size fish. To help acclimate you with fishing in the Hocking Hills, the staff at Cut Above Cabins put together a brief primer for some of the region’s best places to fish. Don’t forget to visit the ODNR website for information on how to obtain an Ohio fishing license! Rose Lake Rose Lake is one of the Hocking Hills hidden fishing gems, thanks to some of the attention garnered by Lake Logan and the Hocking River. Also known as the Hocking Hills Reservoir and Fisherman’s Lake, this human-made lake was created by establishing an earthen dam with ideal vantage points for sizing up fishing spots. Although Rose Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, other abundant species like bluegill, bass, golden trout, and channel catfish are within its lucid waters. Lake Logan Lake Logan is widely considered the quintessential Hocking Hills fishing destination just north of Hocking Hills State Park. Formerly referred to as Hocking Lake, the name was changed to Lake Logan many years ago. Renowned for its sharp banks and a healthy and diverse fish population, Lake Logan is a must-fish destination for anyone seeking crappie, bluegill, catfish, saugeye, or pike! Hocking River Highly regarded as one of the best smallmouth bass fisheries in the state, the Hocking River also plays host to an abundance of other freshwater fish like sauger, channel catfish, crappie, and elusive walleye. Furthermore, with an average depth of approximately three and a half feet, the Hocking River is usually reasonably tranquil, making it much easier to navigate in waders or a small boat. There are also several shore fishing locations if you would instead go on foot.
